Psoriasis is a skin disorder than can occur at any age in both men and women. Most commonly, psoriasis first appears as thick, flaky patches of skin on the elbows, knees, or other parts of the body. The patches may be silver or red.In some cases, psoriasis is so mild that people don’t know they have it. At the opposite extreme, severe psoriasis may cover large areas of the body. Psoriasis cannot be passed from one person to another, though it is more likely to occur in people whose family members have it.The underlying psoriasis cause is unknown. However, it can be genetically inherited or passed from generation to generation. Most researchers agree that the immune system is somehow mistakenly triggered, which speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells. A normal skin cell matures and falls off the body’s surface in 28 to 30 days. But a psoriatic skin cell takes only three to four days to mature and move to the surface. Instead of falling off (shedding), the cells pile up and form the lesions. Possible triggers include: Stress, injury, illness, infection, steroids, and reaction to medications. Psoriasis is not an infection and it is not contagious.Dry, red patches of skin are the most well-known symptoms of psoriasis. The skin replaces itself more quickly than normal, causing excess skin cells to pile up in thick layers. Roughly half of people with psoriasis also have irregular fingernail growth that results in pitting, crumbling, or discoloration of the nail. A smaller proportion of people also experience arthritis symptoms.Because psoriasis is a chronic condition that can progress over time, it is important to get an accurate diagnosis and to understand the challenges and risks that accompany the disease. There are a range of treatment options for psoriasis including topical (applied to the skin), systemic (taken internally) and phototherapy (ultraviolet light applied to the skin).Effective treatment of all but mild to moderate forms of psoriasis usually includes a combination of treatment options and requires a prescription and medical guidance. The treatment of psoriasis has improved greatly with the understanding of the role of the immune system in causing skin abnormalities. However, treatment of psoriasis has been limited by the side-effects of the medications used. The most commonly used medications such as topical steroids, methotrexate, cyclosporine, and psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) can only be used for a limited time. After stopping these medications, symptoms generally return over a variable amount of time. Amevive is unique in that it was well-tolerated in clinical trials and induced a remission of symptoms for up to 1 year after the treatment was discontinued.

Among the entire gamut of skin diseases, psoriasis is most prevalent. This is an acute skin disorder, which generally afflicts people in the westernized developed countries. Psoriasis is a persistent skin eruption that is often genetically inherited.
Apart from the genetically disorders, there are several other reasons contribute to the out break of the same. It is very disheartening that there are few effective treatments available to fight psoriasis, but only some ointments and creams are used as external cure of the same.
Therefore, it is always better that you take care of your skin from the very beginning if you find any probability of the eruption. Once it attacks, it will be difficult for you to fight the same to eradicate completely; the only way out thus is a proper care of skin to avoid the same.
The reasons why psoriasis takes growth are many in numbers. First of all, the medical cause for the same is the low immune system of the body. There is a type of white blood cell, called T cell that builds up resistance power within our body that protects us from infections and diseases.
Excessive accumulation of the same cells, leads to the misbalance and attack of psoriasis thereby. Among its several kinds, most of them cause burning and itching skin. Most of the times this is highly inflammatory with the symptoms of reddish skin that develops layers like scale.
Psoriasis basically is a dry skin disease and a life style disease on the whole. So, dry skin is one of the main causes of psoriasis. Apart from dry skin, there are some other indispensable reasons.
Like the consumption of some fatal drugs can cause the same. Apart from it, also some medicines, any sort of earlier infection, mental stress lead to the possible destruction of the immune system of the body leading to psoriasis.
In other words, psoriasis breaks out from an irregular quality of life. What is causing a grave tension for the doctors and the researchers is that the persistent presence of psoriasis over skin can lead to the psychological troubles also.
Most commonly the patients of psoriasis suffer from mental agony, depression, claustrophobia and like to spend an isolated life.
Psoriasis is a common skin disorder, but unfortunately, it has little effective treatments. Research is on full swing and we can expect a fast result from the advanced world of medicine.
In reality, the researches opine that the anti doses are few as the proper cause of this skin disorder is still unknown.
However, it is not completely devoid of some external as well as temporal treatments. For example, some ointments and cream are available in the markets that soothe the problem temporally. To prevent the disease from growing up, a well moistened body is a must pre condition.
The families, that have the history of psoriasis, should take care for the junior siblings to protect them from the same. Sudden change of climate often causes psoriasis, so in such conditions due care should be adopted.
Most importantly, it is essential to consult a dermatologist even at the very early stage of the eruption.

Any bacteria do not cause psoriasis. No virus or fungus causes it. It is not a contagious disease. There is nothing but body that decides if you will get psoriasis or not. A gene is responsible for psoriasis. Those who have that gene may get psoriasis if it is triggered.

Psoriasis – common triggers

The common triggers of psoriasis are sunburn, stress, skin injury, some medications, infections, smoking, drinking, and change in weather. Any of these can trigger psoriasis in a person who has the faulty gene. The gene makes skin act abnormally. Again it is not necessary that every time the triggers will work. Sometimes they don’t while sometimes a small trigger flares up psoriasis. Talking about the gene, not all siblings get psoriasis. It can be hereditary many times. As we discussed, for getting psoriasis you need a faulty gene and a trigger. Many healthy persons who show no sign of psoriasis sometimes get a small injury and the skin does not heal. After some days, the doctors find out that the person has psoriasis, which is not allowing the skin to heal. The strange behavior of skin at certain places on the body is responsible for psoriasis. Skin misbehaves at the command of a gene. Let us see how skin acts differently in psoriasis.

Psoriasis – skin action in psoriasis

In our skin the bottom layer produces new cells. These new cells take up to a month to travel to the top and the dead cells from the top are shed off. We can say that the skin renews itself every month. What skin cells you have today are not those you were born with. Old cells die and new cells are born. That way our whole body renews itself. In psoriasis skin, the speed at which skin brings up the new cells and sheds the old increases many fold. The cells are shed every third or fourth day instead of a month. This creates the red patches, flakes and itching. The skin misbehaves at the command of a gene.
Every treatment aims towards providing relief to itching, removing the flakes and slowing down the process of skin cells coming up. To learn more about how psoriasis is treated, please click here- Psoriasis: Treatment
